Fonts and Typography

The words "font" and "typeface" are often used interchangeably. This isn't just out of ignorance, but also intentionally: even in a professional setting, the term "font" is used as a universal term, replacing the concepts of "typeface" and "style." The confusion is further compounded by the fact that there is no generally accepted terminology, and different typeface designers rely on different interpretations.

The Russian word "font" has German roots: schrift is a derivative of schreiben ("to write"). The German verb, in turn, goes back to the Latin scribere ("to write, to cut").

According to the definition, a font is:

A set of symbols (typefaces) needed to write text;

A set of symbols united by their character, that is, having a common design.

That is, a font refers to both the design of the font and the complete set of characters used to write the text.

It turns out that a font is what's inside a typeface or typeface family (typeface family, typeface). However, in typography, the word "font" is often used both to designate the typeface itself and when talking about a specific style. A font style is a font with a certain weight and slant.

For example, when we say that TT Norms® Pro is the font that supports the most languages among other fonts in the TypeType collection, we're talking about the TT Norms® Pro typeface. And if we suggest using the TT Livret Text Regular font as the most optimal for writing large amounts of text, we have a specific style in mind.
